#5: The Effects of Menopause on Your Identity
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Menopause isn’t just a physical change, it can deeply affect how a woman sees herself.
For years, many women have tied their identity to roles like being a mother, wife, professional, or even to how youthful or energetic they feel. But when menopause arrives with changes in mood, energy, and body image (especially weight gain) it can leave a woman asking: “Who am I now?”
In today’s episode, we’re exploring how menopause impacts a woman’s sense of identity, and more importantly, how this season can become a powerful opportunity to redefine yourself with confidence, purpose, and peace.
The Identity Shift in Midlife
Who really thinks about menopause before it happens?
In our society, we’ve been conditioned to live life a certain way go to school, get an education, work hard, climb the corporate ladder. But after all that, many women find themselves asking, “What’s next?”
In my coaching work, I’ve seen this pattern over and over. Women start to question their direction and purpose.
They say things like:
“I don’t know what’s next for me.”
“I want to do XYZ, but I don’t know how or if I can.”
“I feel like it’s too late.”
If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone.
The Silence Around Menopause
The big challenge is that we don’t talk about menopause.
It often just happens, and then women are left to figure it out or silently suffer through symptoms for years.
We need to do better as a society:
- Supporting women in perimenopause and menopause, and
- Preparing women in their 30s for what’s to come.
Unfortunately, menopause is often seen in a negative light:
- “You’re moody or emotional.”
Hormonal shifts get dismissed as irritability instead of being understood as a natural transition. That’s why it’s so important to support your body with the right nutrients and focus on balancing hormones. - “You’re getting old.”
Menopause is unfairly tied to aging stereotypes, leading to feelings of invisibility or loss of value. - “It’s not that serious.”
Many underestimate its physical and emotional impact, assuming women should just “push through.” (That’s what my doctor told me,“Just wait until you get to menopause.”) - “You can’t handle stress anymore.”
At work, colleagues or family may misinterpret fatigue, brain fog, or anxiety as weakness or incompetence. - “It’s embarrassing to talk about.”
Some people avoid the topic altogether, leaving women feeling isolated.
Reframing the Narrative
We need to see this season in a positive light:
- “It’s a new season of wisdom and strength.”
In some cultures, menopause is celebrated as a rite of passage. - “There should be extra care and understanding right now.”
Support from spouses, friends, family and especially in the workplace, is vital. Many women leave their jobs because of burnout, sleepless nights, and brain fog, which shouldn’t be the norm. - “It’s a chance for renewal.”
This is a time for growth, self-discovery, a
